2025 (Q1): New passenger vehicle registrations in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) were flat with Germany, Britain, Italy, and France the largest European country markets for new car sales and the UK the leading all-electric car market.

New car sales in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) were down by only 0.4% (or around 12,000 cars) during the first quarter of 2025. Electric car sales increased strongly by 28% with Britain passing Germany as the leading European all-electric car market at the start of 2025. Volkswagen remained the largest carmaker in Europe, the Dacia Sandero the top-selling model, and the Tesla Model Y the best-selling electric car in Europe during the first quarter of 2025.

European New Car Market in 2025 (Q1)
New passenger vehicle registrations in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) contracted by 0.4% to 3,382,057 cars during the first quarter of 2025. In the European Union, new car sales were down almost 2% to 2,715,008 vehicles.
Sales of battery-electric cars (BEV) increased by a strong 28% to 573,500 all-electric cars in Europe and by 23% to 412,997 all-electric cars in the European Union. Electric cars had a 15.2% share of the total European Union new car market during the first quarter of 2025.

Germany remained the largest single-country new car market in Europe during the first quarter of 2025 but sales were down 4.3% or 30,000 cars. In contrast, sales in Britain increased by 6.4% or 35,000 cars. Sales in Italy were weaker while France was the worst performing of the top five European new car markets. Car sales in Spain increased by a strong 14%.
The worst-performing car markets in Europe during the first quarter of 2025 were Estonia, Malta, Slovakia, and Belgium, while the most improved markets were Iceland, Norway, Lithuania, and Latvia.

Battery-electric vehicle sales in Britain increased by a strong 43% during the first quarter of 2025, allowing the UK to overtake Germany as the largest European new car market for all-electric cars.
Despite being the only major European country with lower electric car sales at the start of 2025, France remained the third largest market for all-electric cars in Europe, followed by Belgium and Netherlands.
