Car sales in Europe in November 2024 were slightly weaker than a year ago. Electric car sales increased slightly while plug-in hybrid sales were down 8%. The best-selling car brands in Europe in November 2024 were Volkswagen, Toyota, and Skoda. The top-selling car models were the Dacia Sandero, Tesla Model Y, and VW Golf while the favorite electric cars were the Tesla Model Y, Skoda Enyaq, and Tesla Model 3.

European New Car Market in November 2024

According to JATO Dynamics’ data for 28 European markets, new passenger vehicle registrations in Europe contracted by 1.7% in November 2024 to only 1,054,043 cars. During the first eleven months of 2024, car sales in Europe increased only marginally by 0.8% to 11,847,573 vehicles.

Europe’s five largest car manufacturing groups – Volkswagen Group, Stellantis, Renault Group, BMW Group, and Mercedes-Benz Group – were responsible for 65% of total sales in November 2024. Japan’s carmakers followed with a 13% market share, while Korean brands were responsible for 7.5% of total sales. Brands from the United States, including Tesla and Ford, accounted for 5.9% of total monthly registrations, while China’s carmakers held 6.7% market share last month.

Growth in European new car sales in November came from the Renault Group (+8.6%), Toyota (+9.8%), and Geely (+16%). By contrast, Stellantis, Hyundai-Kia, Ford, Tesla, and Nissan posted double-digit registration drops; Germany’s Mercedes-Benz and BMW also posted losses last month.

Electric models from Volkswagen Group accounted for 26% of monthly BEV registrations in Europe last month, with volumes up 16%.

While overall car registrations in Europe were weaker, demand for electric cars increased by 0.8%. The market share of BEVs increased slightly to 17.4% in November 2024, compared to 17.0% in November 2023. Growth was strongest in the UK (+58%), Netherlands (+44%), Norway (+30%) and Belgium (+17%), while demand fell by 25% and 22% in France and Germany respectively.

Electric models from Volkswagen Group accounted for 26% of monthly BEV registrations in Europe last month, with volumes up 16%. By contrast, Tesla posted a 28% drop in volumes as it continued to navigate delays associated with the updated model of its Model Y. Tesla was the second largest seller of BEVs, followed by BMW Group and Stellantis.

The standout performances of the month came from China’s automakers, which combined registered more than 24,100 units of BEVs in November (including Chinese-owned brands such as Volvo, Polestar, and Lotus), just behind Tesla. China’s automakers increased market share in the BEV category, from 12.5% in November 2023 to 13.2% last month. Growth was driven by Leapmotor (+296%), BYD (+127%), Xpeng (+93%), and Geely (+33%).

VW and Toyota remained the best-selling car brands in Europe in November 2024 with both top brands outperforming the broader market. VW-owned Skoda moved into third position in the monthly rankings, due to strong sales of its Fabia, Enyaq, and Kodiaq models.

Both BMW and Mercedes had weaker sales but both so-called premium brands still outsold all other supposedly main-stream brands. Renault and Peugeot both had stronger sales.

In November 2024, Volvo outsold Vauxhall/Opel in Europe while both MG and Cupra surpassed Fiat, which recorded a 39% drop in registrations following the discontinuation of the gasoline-powered model of its Fiat 500. Outside the top 25 brands, Porsche outsold Land Rover, BYD registered more units than Honda, Omoda moved ahead of Subaru, and Xpeng registered more vehicles than Jaguar or Lancia.

Europe’s Favorite Car Models in November 2024

The Dacia Sandero consolidated its position as Europe’s most popular passenger car. In November 2024, the Sandero was ahead of the Tesla Model Y, followed by the Volkswagen Golf, which was second in the year-to-date ranking.

Among the top ten in the monthly model rankings, the Volkswagen Tiguan, Peugeot 208, Toyota Yaris, and Volkswagen T-Roc recorded the highest year-on-year growth. Other strong performers in November included the Renault Captur, Toyota C-HR, Skoda Fabia, Peugeut 3008, Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Avenger, BMW Series 5, and Suzuki Swift.

The Tesla Model Y was Europe’s favorite electric car model in November 2024 with sales recovering following supply issues related to a model upgrade. It was followed by the Skoda Enyaq while the Tesla Model 3 was third despite sales slumping by 55%.

The Volvo XC60 was the top-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle. Total PHEV sales in Europe in November 2024 were down 8% despite strong growth registered by several of the top-ten models.
