In full-year 2023, Tesla increased worldwide car production and with global sales of over 1.8 million vehicles remained the world’s largest battery-electric carmaker.
2023 (January to December): Tesla increased worldwide car production by over a third to 1,845,985 battery electric vehicles to confirm its position as the leading manufacturer of electric passenger cars in the world. However, BYD claimed to have sold more electric cars than Tesla in the final quarter of 2023.
Tesla Worldwide Sales and Production in 2023
Tesla announced worldwide production and deliveries of Tesla electric cars globally in 2023 as follows:
Tesla 2023 (Full Year) | Production | Deliveries |
Model S/X | 70,826 | 68,874 |
Model 3/Y | 1,775,159 | 1,739,707 |
Total | 1,845,985 | 1,808,581 |
Although Tesla’s production and sales fell short of the 2 million cars predicted earlier in the year, the final results were above analysts’ predictions.
Production of Tesla Cars from 2019 to 2023
Tesla production of electric cars worldwide increased as follows in recent years:
TESLA | 2023 | 2022 | %23/22 | 2021 | 2020 | 2019 |
Model S/X | 70,826 | 71,177 | -0.5% | 24,390 | 54,805 | 62,931 |
Model 3/Y | 1,775,159 | 1,298,434 | 36.7% | 906,032 | 454,932 | 302,301 |
Total TESLA Production | 1,845,985 | 1,369,611 | 34.8% | 930,422 | 509,737 | 365,232 |
Tesla increased global car production by more than a third with the Models 3 and Y remaining by far the most important volume models. Production of the Models S and X were flat but still well above the levels of the preceding three years.
Although Tesla did not separate the sales and production of the Model 3 and Y, the Model Y is considered to be the best-selling Tesla worldwide. Model 3 production was restricted in the final quarter of 2023 with factories retooling and preparing for a model update.
Tesla remained the largest producer of battery-electric cars in the world but BYD is catching up fast with nearly 1.6 million electric cars produced in full-year 2023. Tesla had its traditional very strong final quarter of the year with production and sales just below a half million vehicles. However, that was around 30,000 fewer electric cars than BYD claimed to have sold in the final three months of 2023.
